Grant Horsley Music

Composers Note

This CD has been especially composed to offer teachers and dancers the opportunity to explore and perform to music in world styles. Its primary focus is to offer free dances that can be used  for ballet festivals, shows, auditions, end of year productions etc which offer alternative music to the more traditional  “classical” repertoire. Also they could be used for DDI and DDE choreography and as a useful listening and understanding resource for discerning the characteristics of each style.

Each style has been researched and each one has specific rhythmical nuances traditionally associated with them. For instance, the  heavy accented second beat of the bar in the Mazurka; the syncopated half bar rhythms that naturally occur in the Tango; the heavy “push” in the bass on the third beat in a bar  appearing in the Calypso and so on.

The tracks on this CD are all between 1.00 and 2.10 minutes in length and some have a tempo/mood change to add extra interest.

In consultation with teachers and dancers in the preparation of this music, it was felt that the pieces were generally suited to slightly more advanced dancers, although some younger dancers may respond well to it.

Finally, this album has been recorded “live” on a Yamaha C3 grand piano to emulate the pianist in the room with the dancer. I wanted to convey grace and charm entwined with power and passion in the performance, hopefully to give inspiration through the music.  It has been recorded with few effects so that the reverberation around the rehearsal space is limited.
